Ocean Spaghetti

Who fancies an ocean of blue spaghetti for lunch? 😉

William loved this activity, or rather, he loved eating it!

The blue spaghetti was quick to make and once dried I added it to a shallow bowl and hid plastic sea life animals inside. William had great fun finding them, hiding them again, finding them again and so on….and on and on!

How to dye spaghetti for play

There are a ton of different ways to dye spaghetti but the method I used for this activity was as follows:

1. Cook your desired amount of spaghetti.

2. Cool it under the cold tap.

3. Once cold add to a zip lock bag or plastic container with a lid. Add a few drops of food colouring and mix and soak it up until the colour has spread across all the spaghetti. At one point I was thinking ‘this isn’t going to work’ but keep going and I promise it does. Keep in mind the more food colouring you use (I use liquid) the quicker it will be but more likely it is to come off in play.

4. Optional but I like to rinse the spaghetti under cold water to get rid of excess dye.

5. You can use right away if you’d like or I prefer to cool it in the fridge a little which helps the colour set.

You can use it for a few days if kept in an air tight container. Though I have to say I have never kept it longer than 24 hours with it being cooked. William likes to eat it so it’s not worth the risk after that time (in my opinion).

This ocean spaghetti is the perfect messy and sensory play for little and big kids to explore.
